methods. |
 |
Applications of circulation type classifications in Environmental
sciences. |
 |
Evaluation and verification of circulation & weather type
classifications. |
 |
Future directions of classifications within atmospheric and
environmental science. |
 |

Succesful days in Estonia
COST733 MC and WGs met in Tartu, Estonia 22-24 March
2010 for a very successful meeting. The scientific and social
programme was perfectly organized by our Estonian colleagues. Large
progress in all WGs was reported. The main outcome of the meeting
was to confirm the templates for the final dissemination of the
Action and to prepare the scientific contributions for the final
scientific report. The latest versions of the COST733 circulation
type catalogue (cost733cat) were presented highlighting the quality
check of the dataset. Other highlights were the recent development
in the classifications software including the implementation of
validation routines. Nice results from the testing of the new
catalogue was also presented and discussed.

View Circulation Types

A new web-based application
for plotting centroid maps of different circulation types and associated
statitistics (cost733plot) is launched. Check it out

Training school in Augsburg.
The COST Action 733 Training School ”Classifications in
atmospheric sciences and their applications” was successfully held at
the chair for Physical Geography and Quantitative Methods at the
University of Augsburg in Augsburg, Germany 12.-16 April 2010. The
course was attended by 23 trainees from all over Europe – selected
from more than 60 applications for the training course – most of them
advanced PhD-students or young researchers on the Post-doc-level in
different fields of climatology, meteorology and hydrology. Lectures
and exercises given by 9 experts covered a wide range of topics
including introductory and overview lectures on the theory of
classification methods used in atmospheric sciences, lectures and
exercises related to the development and the quantitative evaluation
and comparison of circulation type classifications and finally
lectures and exercises dealing with the use of circulation and
weather-type classifications for different applications (e.g. climate
change, hydrology, natural hazards, human health). A main focus has
been set to the presentation of and the practical work with the
COST733class software for circulation type classification that has
recently been developed within the COST733 action.
In addition to the daily lectures and exercises student
poster presentations taking place on 3 days offered the opportunity
for scientific discussions and exchange among trainees and lecturers.
Technical problems

The COST733
web-page and the cost733.org server has not been operational for some time
due to technical problems. We are rebuilding the website. Currently the
public part of the website will be available, while we hope to also
re-launch the restricted part soon. |
